Dwight Howard was this years NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner with the 'Superman' dunk in the above video. And not to take away from his victory, but it sucked. I miss the days when you could win without a cape. I guess I will always be partial to Jordan's free throw line dunk, or "Spud" Webb's 360 dunk. I was a young impressionable youth when these guys were dunking. Still though, I mean Spud Webb was 5'7". The fact he could even touch the rim would be amazing, but he beat Dominique Wilkins in a slam dunk contest. The Dominique Wilkins. Watch this video to see what I mean.
That was great, with the whole David vs. Goliath feel.
I know it's probably hard to keep the dunk contest interesting because, now in 2008, what hasn't been done? But there still have to be all kinds of dunks out there waiting to be found, that don't need props to be good. For example Dwight Howard's behind the backboard dunk this year was pretty sweet.
See, that was pretty good, no props needed. No cupcake or cape necessary. Cupcake? See below video.
You know, now that I am writing this and watching these videos, I am finding these prop dunks a little entertaining. I mean, he blew out the candle! That was kinda cool, and it was definitely original. Hmmm.
I guess I miss the days when the dunk contest was taken a little more seriously. When guys just competed with flat out dunking skills and they were the kind of dunks you might actually see in a game. But now a days when more and more guys can dunk, and do it well, the old standard dunks just don't get it done and maybe props are necessary to keep it entertaining. But now it feels like watching a circus act, rather than a contest of who is the best. It's like watching a regular basketball game versus watching the Harlem Globetrotters. The Globe trotters used tricks and props, an it was fun and you knew they were bound to win. Now with the slam dunk contest, it's who has the cupcake or cape on, because they are probably bound to win. If someone could incorporate an animal act into their dunking, they would be a shoe-in. But sometimes its fun to watch the Globetrotters. So I guess the new ways of the dunk contest are entertaining, but different.

I can definately see where you are going with this. The superman dunk was just plain lame. The behind the back board and cupcake ones were a little better since they had to take a different approach to the dunk. Granted I've never watched a slam dunk contest, but I think they should put everyone on a level playing field. Raise the rim based on height. If a 5' guy can dunk on a 10' rim, than a 7' guy should have to dunk on a 12' rim or a 14' rim (if you want to look at it proportionately) - plain and simple.
I take issue with the "Superman Cape" dunk for the fact that I don't think it was a dunk. He threw the ball through the rim from about a foot out. My critereia is that 1)the person's hand needs to at least touch the rim for it to be considered a dunk and 2)the person needs to hang on the rim to make sure.
The winner is 'Nique.
